Eastern Wisdom
as a Rigorous Discipline

"Eastern wisdom traditions offer not a complement to Western thought, but an independent philosophical architecture — one capable of reframing the deepest questions of mind, reality, and human transformation."

東方智慧,非補充,乃另一根基。

The Eastern Wisdom Research Institute (EWRI) is a Delaware-registered nonprofit research organization dedicated to advancing original scholarship at the intersection of Zen Buddhism, Yogācāra philosophy, contemplative science, and contemporary psychology.

We approach Eastern wisdom not as religious doctrine, but as a precise analytical and transformative system — one in rigorous dialogue with neuroscience, philosophy of mind, AI ethics, and modern therapeutic practice.

EWRI operates on three levels: advancing original academic research, translating insights into accessible programs for personal wellbeing, and contributing to the philosophical foundations needed for a wiser, more humane civilization.

Three Pillars · 三大支柱

From Scholarship
to Civilization

01 🔬
Academic Research
學術研究

Original scholarship in Zen, Yogācāra, and cross-religious contemplative mechanisms. Publishing in peer-reviewed journals, building a systematic theoretical framework that stands alongside Western philosophical traditions in analytical rigor.

02 🌿
Mind & Wellbeing
心靈療愈

Translating Yogācāra insights into accessible programs addressing anxiety, emotional turbulence, and the search for meaning — helping individuals understand and transform the roots of suffering through a non-religious, evidence-informed approach.

03 🌐
Wisdom & Society
智慧與文明

Applying Eastern monistic philosophy to contemporary civilizational challenges — AI ethics, consciousness science, and the philosophical foundations of a more humane technological future. East-meets-West, not as compromise, but as genuine synthesis.

Three Active
Research Programs

EWRI's current research focuses on three interconnected areas where Eastern wisdom traditions offer distinctive and underexplored insights. These programs are in active development and expand as new scholarship is completed.

Program I
Zen Enlightenment Mechanisms
禪宗頓悟機制研究

Systematic analysis of how Zen practice — particularly koan engagement and sudden insight — functions as a precise technology of consciousness transformation. Research examines the pedagogical, phenomenological, and epistemological dimensions of enlightenment as a structured, reproducible process, in dialogue with contemporary philosophy of mind.

Zen Buddhism Koan Practice Contemplative Science Philosophy of Mind
Program II
Yogācāra Psychology & Consciousness
唯識心理學與意識研究

Translating the Yogācāra school's eight-consciousness model into a contemporary framework for understanding emotional roots, habitual conditioning, and psychological transformation. This program explores how the Yogācāra system — particularly the ālayavijñāna and manas — offers a more structurally complete account of mind than current Western psychological models.

Yogācāra Consciousness Studies Theoretical Psychology
Program III
Eastern Wisdom & AI Ethics
東方智慧與人工智能倫理

Applying Yogācāra's sophisticated analysis of consciousness, cognitive distortion (vikalpa), and interdependence (pratītyasamutpāda) to contemporary AI ethics. This program offers a non-Western philosophical framework for questions of AI bias, hallucination, value alignment, and the ethical foundations of intelligent systems.

AI Ethics Yogācāra Philosophy of Technology

Additional research programs in cross-religious contemplative mechanisms and non-dual philosophy are in early development. Updates will be posted as work progresses.

Lai Zhenguo is a doctoral candidate at Lumbini Buddhist University (Nepal) and the founder of the Eastern Wisdom Research Institute. His doctoral research investigates the role, function, and mechanisms of koans in guiding enlightenment within the Zen tradition — a systematic examination of how classical Zen pedagogical tools operate at the intersection of phenomenology, consciousness studies, and transformative practice.

His broader research agenda concerns the mechanisms by which Eastern wisdom traditions — particularly Zen and Yogācāra — engineer fundamental transformations of consciousness, and how these insights can be rigorously articulated for dialogue with contemporary philosophy, psychology, and AI ethics. He is particularly interested in developing a non-religious, analytically precise account of contemplative transformation that can stand in genuine intellectual dialogue with Western philosophical traditions.

Juewu founded EWRI in 2025 with the conviction that Eastern wisdom deserves its own independent scholarly platform — one committed to intellectual rigor, cross-disciplinary engagement, and long-term contribution to both academic understanding and human flourishing.
